The History of bauma

The bauma in Munich ranks among the largest trade fairs in the world in its category and has been an impressive spectacle for technology enthusiasts, professionals and entrepreneurs from the construction industry for many decades. Since its founding, it has evolved into a global meeting place for the construction, building materials and mining machinery industries. With more than 3,000 exhibitors from over 60 countries and an exhibition area of more than 600,000 square meters, bauma attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every three years.

The roots of bauma go back to 1954, when it was first held in Munich under the name “Frühjahrsausstellung für Baumaschinen” (Spring Exhibition for Construction Machinery). The first event attracted 58 exhibitors and around 8,000 trade visitors. Even then, the vision was clear: to create a platform where construction professionals could discover the latest machines, equipment and technologies.

The Key Milestones:

  • 1954: First bauma held at Theresienhöhe in Munich.
  • 1967: Renamed “bauma”, an acronym for “Bau- und Maschinenmesse” (construction and machinery trade fair).
  • 1998: Relocation to the new exhibition grounds in Munich-Riem, offering considerably more space.
  • 2022: Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, bauma presented groundbreaking innovations and proved its importance as the leading industry platform.
