Messe Frankfurt – Exhibition of Superlatives

As an internationally significant financial center, “Mainhattan”, as the tradition-rich trading city is fondly called on account of its imposing skyline, boasts remarkable continuity. As early as Roman times, an important outpost was established at a ford on the banks of the Main. In the Middle Ages, Frankfurt was a flourishing trading city. First an…

Messe Frankfurt – the World’s Largest Organizer

For Peter Feldmann, the city’s mayor at the time, one thing was clear: “The trade fair is a driving force behind the development of our city,” as he emphasized in 2020 during the celebrations marking the 780th anniversary of the granting of the trade fair privilege by Emperor Barbarossa. He went on to say: “Nowhere are trade fair history and city history as closely intertwined as in Frankfurt.” It is hard to disagree with that. It is thanks to Messe Frankfurt GmbH, founded in 1907, that the city consistently devoted itself to its heritage in the industrial age and took the organization of the Frankfurt trade fair into its own hands.

Today, the organization is the world’s largest organizer of trade fairs, generating an annual turnover of around 500 million euros. Apart from Frankfurt, it organizes trade fairs, exhibitions, and congresses worldwide, both in Germany and abroad. In 2018, for example, 101 of the 148 trade activities organized by Messe Frankfurt took place in other countries. In Frankfurt itself, enthusiastic trade fair visitors never get bored, as around 50 trade fairs are spread across the city in a single calendar year.

Messe Frankfurt – the Exhibition Grounds

With an exhibition area of around 370,000 m2 spread across eleven halls, the Frankfurt exhibition grounds rank third in the world behind Hanover and Shanghai. The expansion of the exhibition grounds completed in 2007 has clearly paid off. The grounds are centrally located in the districts of Bockenheim and Westend-Süd. Frankfurt’s exhibition grounds are rightly described as a “city within the city”.

They are a world of their own, with many sights and architectural highlights. Internationally renowned architects such as Helmut Jahn, Martin Schoenmakers, Oswald Mathias Ungers, and Nicholas Grimshaw were at the top of their game with their designs. Visitors can stop for refreshments in around 26 restaurants, cafés, bars, and many other delightful establishments. Shopping is done at the Skyline Plaza shopping center.

The Highlights of the Exhibition Grounds

The first sight to see is the iconic Festhalle, a majestic neo-baroque domed building inaugurated by Emperor Wilhelm II in 1909 on the occasion of the historic trade fair. An exciting contrast to this Wilhelminian showpiece is provided by the light-flooded Kap Europa congress center, designed in 2014 and captivating with its clear forms. Large floor-to-ceiling windows and high ceilings create a strikingly pleasant atmosphere.

While the 117-meter-tall Torhaus with its three interconnected, concave building sections and its reddish stone facade divides the fairgrounds into a western and an eastern area, the roof terrace of the cubist Portalhaus is a wonderful place to dine. Each individual exhibition hall is an architectural gem that sets its own accents while blending harmoniously into the ensemble. Last but not least, the exhibition grounds provide a breathtaking backdrop for the legendary after-show parties.

The Most Important Trade Fairs in Frankfurt

In a line of tradition reaching back to the Middle Ages, the city places a particular focus on its spring and autumn fairs. The events are usually organized according to the “Frankfurt principle”. This means the exhibitions follow a coherent thematic structure that provides visitors with orientation. There is a clearly defined area for every topic and every industry. Orientation is ensured at all times.

The following trade fairs are the most popular:
