Since the sometimes gigantic exhibition halls can be interconnected as needed, the exhibition provides a worthy setting even for large-scale events, despite its regional focus and its orientation toward small and medium-sized businesses. Many visitors combine attending a showcase with a trip to Kassel to explore the many sights of the city of culture. The city is excellently geared toward tourism, and numerous hotels as well as a beautiful campsite can be found in the surrounding area.

It should be noted that some trade fairs in Kassel do not take place on the exhibition grounds but in the Documenta-Halle. In the 2024/25 trade fair season, this applied to the biogas trade fair on November 27 and 28, 2024, as well as the wedding fair on January 20 and 21, 2025. All in all, the trade fair in Kassel is an important economic driver, cultural meeting place and image ambassador for the city and its surroundings, connecting the companies of this region with one another.

Kassel – A Trading City with Tradition

Strictly speaking, the first event officially documented as a trade fair took place in what was then the royal seat of Kassel as early as 1763. The initiative went back to Landgrave Frederick II, who decreed that the exhibitions were to run for two weeks each in spring and autumn. The venue of the fair was the Berlepsche Haus, declared the trade fair house at the time, which had to make way for the city’s new town hall in 1904.

In the same year, the Commercien-Collegium, the forerunner of the Kassel-Marburg Chamber of Industry and Commerce, was founded in Kassel as the successor to the ill-fated Commercien-Kammer. Among the members of the collegium were merchants who, in the spirit of mercantilism, were closely involved in the work of the government so that they could directly implement the Landgrave’s economic directives.

A further revival of Kassel’s economy coincided with the introduction of freedom of trade in 1869. By then, the boom of the Gründerzeit era following the victory over France and the unification of the German Empire in 1871 was already just around the corner. The modern Messe Kassel, however, traces its tradition back to 1961, when the first post-war trade fair was still held in the Stadthalle. Today’s modern exhibition grounds were not built until the 1980s, designed along functional lines.

There Is Always Something Going On at the Exhibition Grounds

Trade fair visitors sense nothing of all these origins as they stroll across the modern exhibition grounds during an exhibition. Yet the rich tradition of the former royal seat of Kassel, which as the Documenta city is home to the world’s largest art exhibition, is reflected not only in the cityscape with its multitude of sights such as Wilhelmshöhe Palace, the Orangerie in the Karlsaue and the magnificent Bergpark in Wilhelmshöhe with admirable attractions such as the Löwenburg castle ruins, the Ballhaus and the Roseninsel.

Kassel sees itself as a vibrant city of culture – an aspiration that also reflects on the trade fair, which benefits greatly from this cultural environment and repeatedly succeeds in integrating cultural and musical elements into its trade fair program. Major events such as concerts and music festivals take place on the exhibition grounds time and again. The multifunctional Rothenbach-Halle on the exhibition grounds is the home venue of Bundesliga handball club TV Melsungen. On other days, the exhibition grounds host exciting medieval markets, sporting events of all kinds, theater, revues and dance parties, and last but not least the Festival of Cultures.

The Exhibition Grounds

Messe Kassel consists of a prestigious entrance hall built in 2002, the Rothenbach-Halle built in 2007, which offers space for up to 5,000 trade fair visitors, and 13 exhibition halls of various sizes. The exhibition grounds were built in the 1980s, so a modern, well-maintained and comfortable ambience awaits visitors. Many of the uniformly designed exhibition halls with their typical red gabled roofs are also newer buildings from the decades that followed. The exhibition grounds are encircled by Damaschkestraße. The parking lots are located to the east and west of the grounds. They are free of charge and offer space for 3,000 cars.

The scenic surroundings of the exhibition grounds are also worth mentioning. Seen from the site, the Fulda river flows to the west, the Bugasee lake beckons to the north, and to the south the Waldauer Kiessteine nature reserve casts its spell. Anyone wishing to briefly escape the trade fair bustle will find plenty of attractive retreats away from the exhibition grounds. This is probably the reason why there are virtually no open-air spaces on the exhibition grounds themselves.

There is a lively bustle of activity and conversation at Messe Kassel. Various technical exhibits are presented under bright lights at the stands. A large banner bears the inscription “opta data gruppe”. A blue carpet guides visitors through the trade fair, where comfortable seating is arranged in one area.

Getting to the Trade Fair

One advantage of the Kassel trade fair is how quickly it can be reached. It is directly connected to the motorway network and excellently linked to public transport. Bus line 12 runs directly to the exhibition grounds as well as to the Auestadion stop, which is served by other transport lines such as the RT5 tram or bus line 500.

Train and ICE travelers alight at Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe station, where they can transfer to bus line 12. From Kassel-Calden Airport, guests can reach the exhibition grounds in just half an hour. Trade fair visitors from the city or region have the option of cycling to the fair. In addition to the 3,000 free parking spaces, the exhibition grounds also feature larger parking areas for bicycles.
