How it all began
The Leipziger Messe is inextricably intertwined with the history of the city of Leipzig. A local saying has it that Leipzig is home to the only trade fair in the world that keeps its own city. When the settlement, founded around 900 by Slavic tribes, was granted town rights by Margrave Otto the Rich in 1165, this event coincided with the granting of the market privilege. From then on, no competing markets were allowed to be held within a radius of one mile (15 kilometers).
The granting of market rights was owed to Leipzig’s favorable position, as the city lay at the crossroads of two great trade routes, the Via Imperii and the Via Regia. While the Via Imperii connected the north of Europe with the south, leading from Stettin to Rome, the Via Regia marked the east-west axis of Eurasia, creating a link from the Spanish pilgrimage site of Santiago de Compostela via Moscow to Novgorod.
The three Leipzig rivers, the Weiße Elster, Parthe, and Pleiße, did their part to strengthen Leipzig’s economy in the Middle Ages, could be harnessed for water power, and enabled the transport of goods over enormous distances via other rivers and canals.

Great strides through history
Magnificent sacred buildings such as St. Thomas Church and St. Nicholas Church arose in the wake of this founding euphoria. An influential merchant bourgeoisie quickly developed. The right granted by Elector Frederick II in 1458 to hold a third annual fair in a calendar year – the New Year’s Fair, alongside the popular spring and autumn fairs – was another milestone in Leipzig’s history. With the imperial trade fair privilege received from Emperor Maximilian I, Leipzig could now eliminate the competition within a radius of 125 km and in 1710 even overtook the world-famous Frankfurt fair at the Römer.
The Leipziger Messe in the industrial age
In the course of the Industrial Revolution, Leipzig held its ground as an internationally recognized trade fair city. The exhibition of 1895, which went down in history as the “Mustermesse” (sample fair), radically influenced the global trade fair industry, because the idea of offering customers samples instead of finished products and delivering the desired goods after ordering gave exhibitors a welcome opportunity to accommodate many times more products in a limited space. The innovation found enthusiastic imitators and quickly advanced to become the international trade fair standard.
It is equally remarkable that as early as October 1945, at the instigation of the Soviet military administration, an exhibition – albeit on a smaller scale – took place once again in devastated post-war Germany with the “Musterschau Leipziger Erzeugnisse” (sample show of Leipzig products). The “Peace Fair” that followed the next year, with the participation of the four occupying powers, marked a certain spirit of optimism and hope for better times even before this alliance of convenience fell apart.
In the GDR, Leipzig retained its status as a trade fair city and managed to motivate numerous visitors and exhibitors from the western side of the Iron Curtain to attend.
Futuristic exhibition grounds
It is worth taking a closer look at the new glass palace, 238 meters long, 80 meters wide, and 30 meters high. It is the undisputed landmark of the Leipziger Messe and an imposing jewel for the entire city.
In its sweeping, arched structure, it is aesthetically modeled on the Crystal Palace of the 1851 World’s Fair in London, yet also echoes the striking dome-shaped main railway station. The artful aesthetics not only radiate considerable appeal into the surroundings but also underscore the artistic ambition of the Leipziger Messe, which houses numerous works by important artists in the atrium of the exhibition building.
The effect of the monumental glass hall is enhanced by the artificially created pond and the generous wooded open-air area, which, with a capacity of 70,000 m2, is wonderfully suited to outdoor events. Next to the glass hall, and connected to it by tubes, are five modern exhibition halls offering every conceivable comfort, which together form the perfect setting for large-scale events. The result is trade fairs cast from a single mold. Among the exhibition halls, Hall 1, marketed as HALLE:EINS, stands out with its extendable grandstand for 15,000 spectators.
This tube complex also includes the Congress Center Leipzig (CCL) with its 23 exhibition rooms, aesthetically convincing with its clear, straight-lined design language. All buildings offer state-of-the-art media technology and can be perfectly tailored to the character of the event, so that every congress, exhibition, concert, and show can take place in the right atmosphere. The Kongreßhalle am Zoo, resplendent in the finest Art Nouveau style, is not part of the immediate exhibition grounds but was nevertheless acquired by the organizer to give a dignified setting to events better suited to a historical style.
